Portuguese commemorative coins as a means of payment

Mensagempor Graf » segunda fev 19, 2018 10:07 am

First, I would like to introduce myself. I am a coin and stamp dealer from Minden/Germany and unfortunately I do not speak portuguese.
I have heard that early 8 and 10 Euros Portuguese commemorative coins in Portugal are not accepted as a means of payment. Does this apply all coins or only certain years. Thank you for your help.

Hi,
Portuguese 8 and 10 euro coins have legal tender in Portugal and, therefore, they must be accepted. This said, a few cases have been reported of organizations rejecting these coins, which is illegal. I believe that the European law states that any commemorative coin (except the 2 euros) only has legal tender in the issuing country.

Thank you. Then it will be better to return them on the next Portugal holiday than to melt them down or sell them here in Germany for less than the face value.

You can always try to sell them to collectors, even online, for little more than the face value.
